Chapter 9
âI hope Iâm not too early,â Andrew said in an apologetic tone. âI wouldnât have knocked, but I could see that your lights were on.â
âIâve been up for hours,â Bessie assured him as she let him into her cottage. âI hope you arenât up early because you couldnât sleep last night.â
âNot at all. I slept incredibly well and woke up at seven feeling better than I have in years. After a leisurely shower and breakfast, I just couldnât seem to find anything else to do to fill my time, though. When I went out for a walk, I noticed that your lights were on, so I thought I might as well just come over here.â
âIâm glad you did. We can head to Peel anytime, really,â Bessie told him. âWe can have a walk around the quayside if we get there too early to visit Ron at his office.â
âI was wondering if we should ring him first,â Andrew said. âWhat if heâs out all day showing houses?â
Bessie thought for a minute. âWe want to go to Peel anyway,â she pointed out. âIf we wait until nine to ring him, we wonât get to Peel until half nine or later. Letâs just go. If heâs not available, we can make an appointment for later today, or tomorrow, even.â
âIs there anything interesting to see between here and Peel?â
âWe could stop at Tynwald Hill if youâd like. Thatâs where the islandâs government meets every fifth of July.â
âI heard about Tynwald Day when I was stationed here. Iâm sorry now that I didnât go along that year to see it. I didnât do anything other than work. I knew I wasnât going to be here for long, but at the time that seemed like a good thing. I wanted to be where the action was, not traipsing around historical sites or anything like that.â
âYou were much younger, of course. I remember wanting to do exciting things when I was younger as well. Instead, I stayed in my little cottage and simply enjoyed being where I was.â
âBut you lived in the US. For many people, that would be quite exciting.â
âI donât remember it terribly well now,â Bessie told him. âWhen I first bought my cottage here, I did think about moving back, though. The island felt very foreign to me, really. Iâd been in the US from the age of two and didnât remember living on the island before that. Now Iâm glad I stayed here, but there was a time when thought I would go as soon as I could save enough money for the journey.â
âIf you were trying to save money, why did you buy a house?â
Bessie laughed. âLooking back now, I suppose I didnât really want to leave the island, but I kept telling myself that I was going to go. I bought my cottage so that I could get away from my parents, as I blamed them for Matthewâs death. But even then, as much as the island felt strange to me, it also felt oddly like home.
